The short list, by what you need

Check compatibility first, then choose by app and room sensing. A C-wire is a wire that gives the thermostat steady power. If your home needs one and lacks it, the extra part for each pick is sold separately. We compare published specifications, not our own tests.

PICK 01 · Alexa homes with a supported 24V system

Amazon Smart Thermostat

A simple choice if you already use Alexa and your system passes Amazon's compatibility check.

C-wire

Not for
110–240V systems; dual-fuel heat pumps
Manufacturer specifications for the stated US model. These are not our test results.

Amazon says it works with most 24V systems, including conventional forced air, heat pumps and radiant boilers. It does not work with 110–240V systems such as electric baseboard heat. You set it up and control it in the Alexa app.

Amazon's help page narrows the heat pump support. It covers air-to-air and geothermal heat pumps, but not dual-fuel systems: a heat pump with gas or oil backup heat. If that describes your home, this thermostat is not the right fit.

It needs a C-wire or a compatible adapter, which is sold separately. There is no built-in microphone, so voice control needs a separate Alexa device. Some compatible Echo devices and the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor can act as remote temperature sensors.

Why consider it

  • Setup and control in the Alexa app.
  • Listed for forced air, many heat pumps and radiant boilers.
  • Some compatible Echo devices can report room temperature.

What to check

  • Not for dual-fuel heat pumps with gas or oil backup.
  • Needs a C-wire or a separately sold adapter.
  • Voice control needs a separate Alexa device.

PICK 02 · A choice of Alexa, Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant

ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential

Worth a look if you want a wider choice of smart-home platforms and your system is fairly simple.

App and voice
ecobee app; Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant
System stages
2 heat/1 cool or 1 heat/2 cool; heat pump 2 heat/1 cool
Manufacturer specifications for the stated US model. These are not our test results.

ecobee lists the Essential for conventional systems with up to two heating stages and one cooling stage, or one heating and two cooling stages. A stage is a level of heating or cooling output. For heat pumps, it lists two heating stages and one cooling stage. Some terminals share jobs, so don't assume it handles every multistage system.

It needs 24VAC power through C and R wires. Without a C-wire, ecobee offers a Power Extender Kit (PEK), but the Essential does not include one. The PEK needs at least four suitable wires and does not work with heat-only or dual-transformer setups.

You control it in the ecobee app, and it works with Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. It follows your temperature schedule and senses temperature and humidity at the thermostat. ecobee's SmartSensor for other rooms works with it but is sold separately; Premium is the model that includes one.

Why consider it

  • Works with Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant.
  • Built-in temperature and humidity sensing.
  • Can add ecobee SmartSensors for other rooms.

What to check

  • Limited heating and cooling stage support.
  • Power Extender Kit not included and not for every home.
  • SmartSensor and Trim Kit are sold separately.

PICK 03 · A room sensor in the box and Google Home or Matter

Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)

Our pick to consider if you want a remote temperature sensor included and use Google Home or Matter.

Google says the fourth-generation model works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump and radiant. This listing is the Polished Obsidian bundle with one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen). Older Learning models and the regular Nest Thermostat are different products.

Google designed it to work without a C-wire in most homes, not all. Some homes still need a C-wire or the Nest Power Connector, which is not listed in the box. The Power Connector also needs a compatible system and is not a fix for millivolt or high-voltage systems.

Setup needs the Google Home app, and it works with Google Home and Matter. Smart Schedule can learn your preferred temperatures and adjust the schedule; you can choose whether to accept its suggestions. The included sensor gives the thermostat a temperature reading from another room. It does not create separate zones: one thermostat still controls the same heating and cooling system.

Why consider it

  • One Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) in the box.
  • Works with Google Home and Matter.
  • Designed to run without a C-wire in most homes.

What to check

  • Some homes still need a C-wire or Power Connector.
  • Google Home app required for setup.
  • The sensor does not create separate heating zones.

Check your system before you buy

Start with your heating and cooling type. All three picks need a 24V system. Electric baseboard heaters and other 110–240V systems are not controlled the same way, so these thermostats are the wrong choice for them.

Our decision process, not measured product performance.

Next, check power with the maker's compatibility tool or help page for the exact model. If you need a C-wire adapter, Power Extender Kit or Power Connector, budget for it separately. An adapter does not make an unsupported system compatible.

Then choose by app and sensors. A smart thermostat controls your system; it does not measure your home's electricity use. Runtime reports in an app are not kWh readings or proof of savings.

Our electricity cost calculator estimates energy charges from known appliance watts and hours. It cannot predict HVAC runtime or savings from a thermostat. For separate plug-in devices, see our appliance measurement guide.

How we chose these products

We read each maker's product, specification and support pages, then matched the exact models to Amazon US listings. We focused on what decides the purchase: system type, power wiring, app choice and room sensors.

Our decision process, not measured product performance.

We have not installed or tested these thermostats. We do not rate comfort or accuracy, promise lower bills, or show prices and stock. Features we could not confirm are left out.

This guide does not explain wiring. If you are unsure what system you have, use the maker's compatibility check or ask a qualified HVAC technician.

“Best” means our preferred fit for the stated use among this shortlist. It does not claim a complete market test. See our editorial approach for how we handle sources and affiliate links.

Common buying questions

What is a C-wire?

A C-wire, or common wire, gives a smart thermostat a steady power supply. Not every home has one at the thermostat. The Amazon and ecobee picks need one or a separately sold adapter. The Nest works without one in most homes, but not all.

Will these thermostats work with electric baseboard heat?

No. All three are for 24V systems. Amazon lists 110–240V systems such as electric baseboard heat as incompatible, and Google says high-voltage systems need different control. Look for a thermostat made for that type of heating.

Does a room sensor create separate zones?

No. A sensor gives the thermostat a temperature reading from another room. Your one thermostat still runs the same heating and cooling system. It cannot heat or cool that room on its own.

Will a smart thermostat lower my energy bill?

We can't promise that. We have not tested these models, and results depend on your home, your system and your settings. A thermostat changes how your system runs; it does not guarantee a lower bill.
