The short list, by what you need

Choose by the equipment you need to keep running. The CyberPower offers a higher watt ceiling; the APC Pro is an alternative for buyers who prefer APC's management tools; the smaller APC fits low-power networking. None is a promise of all-day backup.

PICK 01 · A desktop with room for a larger load

CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD

The first model to compare when your measured desktop load calls for more than a small networking UPS.

The checked US specification pairs a 1,000 W limit with sine wave output on battery. CyberPower specifically lists compatibility with active-PFC power supplies, a type used in many desktop computers. Its AVR can correct smaller voltage changes without switching to the battery.

Only six of its twelve AC outlets receive battery backup. Put the computer, needed monitor and essential network equipment on those marked outlets. The other six provide surge protection only. Plan that layout before buying: twelve sockets do not mean twelve backed-up devices.

Our recommendation is based on those capabilities, not proof of longer runtime than the APC. Check the rating label on the unit you receive. This guide covers the listed 1,000 W version; do not substitute a similarly named model or assume an older unit has the same specification.

Why consider it

  • Sine wave battery output and active-PFC compatibility
  • AVR and a load/status display
  • User-replaceable battery

What to check

  • Six outlets are surge-only
  • Battery replacement depends on the unit's serial-number revision
  • Higher watt capacity does not establish longer runtime

PICK 02 · A desktop using APC management tools

APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500MS2

A sine wave alternative worth comparing if APC's software and replacement-battery support fit your setup.

The BR1500MS2 supplies up to 900 W and has six battery-backed AC outlets plus four surge-only outlets. Its line-interactive design includes AVR, which adjusts voltage within its operating range. The LCD helps you check the UPS status without opening computer software.

Choose this exact MS2 model for the listed sine wave specification. A different APC model with 1500 in its name is not automatically equivalent. The shared 1500 VA headline also does not give it the same watt limit as the CyberPower above.

If automatic shutdown matters, check the current APC software support for your operating system before ordering, then configure it after installation. USB charging ports are separate from the UPS data connection. For a NAS, verify the NAS manufacturer's exact UPS compatibility list rather than assuming a USB port is enough.

Why consider it

  • Sine wave output with AVR
  • Six battery-backed AC outlets
  • Replaceable APCRBC163 battery cartridge

What to check

  • 900 W output limit, despite the 1500 VA name
  • Four outlets are surge-only
  • Shutdown support must match your operating system or NAS

PICK 03 · A router, modem and small networking setup

APC Back-UPS BE600M1

A simpler candidate when your priority is low-power networking instead of a demanding desktop.

The BE600M1 has a much lower 330 W ceiling. Five outlets provide battery backup and two are surge-only. That makes it a candidate for a modem, router and small switch, provided their combined load and power adapters fit the unit's limits and outlet spacing.

It uses a stepped approximation to a sine wave on battery, rather than the sine wave output of the two tower models. Check that your equipment accepts this output. We would start with the sine wave candidates for a desktop whose power supply requires it, rather than buy this unit just because its watt limit looks sufficient.

Keeping the router powered cannot restore an internet provider's failed network. Include an ONT or separate modem in your backup plan if your connection needs one. A laptop already has its own battery, so protecting the network may be more useful than adding another large load to this small UPS.

Why consider it

  • Five battery-backed outlets for a small setup
  • A simpler option when a desktop tower UPS is unnecessary
  • Replaceable battery

What to check

  • 330 W limit leaves less room for larger equipment
  • Stepped battery waveform; check compatibility
  • No guarantee that your provider stays online

Size a UPS around your work, then check runtime

Write down what must stay on during a power cut. A computer and one monitor may be enough to save a document. A router-only setup has a different job. Measure the combined load during demanding normal use; a computer power supply's printed maximum is not its constant consumption.

Our decision process, not measured product performance.

Stay within both the UPS watt and VA limits, with room for changing load and future additions. Then use the manufacturer's runtime curve at your expected load. Do not divide VA by watts to invent minutes of backup: VA is not stored battery energy.

Leave space for ventilation and access to the battery. Check the manual before connecting equipment; these office picks are not a shopping list for heaters or other high-drain appliances. After setup, confirm the correct battery outlets and shutdown settings using the manufacturer's test procedure.

For compatible plug-in equipment, follow our appliance measurement steps. To estimate energy charges, use the electricity cost calculator; it is not a UPS runtime calculator.

How we chose these products

We compared published US manufacturer specifications and matched the exact models to Amazon.com listings. These are research-based recommendations, not hands-on tests. Best means a useful fit for the stated job among these three candidates, not a measured winner across every UPS on sale.

Our decision process, not measured product performance.

Our priorities were usable watt capacity, battery-backed outlets, output waveform, voltage regulation and serviceable batteries. We did not rank products by star ratings, commission or an unverified sale price. We have not measured noise, transfer performance or battery life ourselves.

Listings can change variants. Confirm the model, voltage, seller, condition and return terms before ordering. Amazon product identity was checked; current stock and delivery to your address are not guaranteed. Manufacturer runtime charts are estimates for specified loads, not promises for your desk.

“Best” means our preferred fit for the stated use among this shortlist. It does not claim a complete market test. See our editorial approach for how we handle sources and affiliate links.

Common buying questions

Does a UPS save electricity?

Adding a UPS does not automatically reduce your bill. It uses energy itself. ENERGY STAR efficiency helps compare UPS designs and their losses; buy backup for continuity, then choose an efficient model that meets the job.

How long will these UPS units run my computer?

That depends on the load, battery condition and operating conditions. Consult the exact model's runtime curve, then allow time for shutdown. Two units labeled 1500 VA can have different runtime; the label alone cannot answer this.

Do I need pure sine wave output?

Follow your equipment manufacturer's requirements. Sine wave output is the starting point here for a desktop that needs it. A smaller stepped-wave UPS may suit networking equipment, but compatibility should be confirmed for the connected adapters.

Is a surge protector the same as a UPS?

No. A surge-only outlet does not supply battery power during an outage. These UPS units contain both outlet types, so check the markings when connecting the equipment you need to keep running.
